“The TRMTAB collections combine clever design, quality and pride through the hands of factory craftspeople. We collaborate with factories to create unconventional, thoughtful ways of making. Each cleverly designed TRMTAB comes from a thoughtful, unconventional way of making in a factory -- instilling a sense of pride in their skill and artisanship.
Our collections are proudly handcrafted by factory craftspeople in Northern India. The woven and chevron-stitched pieces are upcycled from leather trims. The trims combine to create a unique blend of color shades, textures and grains giving each product within the collection its own personality. With age and use, the leather develops a distressed look and rich patina.
TRMTAB is inspired by a term coined by systems theorist Buckminster Fuller. "Call me trimtab," he famously said referring to a tiny surface on the end of a ship rudder. With a little pressure, it can change the direction of the ship. An individual can be a trimtab by making small changes that lead to a big impact.
TRMTAB serves as a reminder that we can all be trim tabs. In a partnership with Prachi Leathers, in Kanpur, India, TRMTAB launched the factory's first upcycling initiative, and their first small change. Our collections and making methods continue to be inspired by the power of creating small changes. Any of the woven or chevron stitched components are upcycled. As a result, we are only able to make limited editions of the collections.
The upcycled leathers are either scraps generated from the factory's production cycles, dead stock, or "lower selection" raw hides which would be otherwise cast aside by brands and customers.
Lower selection hides are categorized into b-grade, or c-grade leathers. These leathers are not lower quality - but are set aside as because they contain scars and other natural defects. Often, because of these flaws, these lower grade leathers become unusable for the tannery. Think of how unfortunately looking vegetables are cast away even before they reach the grocery stores only due to their visual flaws and defects. The TRMTAB initiative helps the tannery at Prachi Leathers utilize some of their lowest selections of raw hides. “ - TRMTAB
